MASSENA -- Village trustees say they are not interested in creating a rental registry similar to the one being discussed in Canton.
Board members at the Sept. 19 meeting said they want to come up with a running list of landlords in the village with current contact information.
“Canton just went through and did the same thing,” Trustee Francis Carvel said on Tuesday. “That’s something we might want to take a look at before we go further.”
“Canton’s, from what I’ve read in the fine press, is more in my opinion, of licensing, even though they may not be using those words … involves inspections, self-certifications, legal signing,” Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire said. “What we were looking at is more of the filing of information to find the owners.”
Mayor Tim Currier said they will release a final draft of the proposed law and hold a public hearing before voting.
“We’re nowhere near the final implementation of such a law,” Currier said.
Canton’s proposal would call for landlords to self-certify that they are up to code and disclose the number of tenants, under threat of prosecution for filing false information. More about that is at goo.gl/Nkym69.
