MASSENA -- The Massena Central School District and the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe will soon renegotiate the Title VI contract, which deals with education of Native American students.

The five-year deal expires in June.

At Thursday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Pat Brady said it includes a number of provisions to include the tribe in the education plan for Native students. There is a per-student payment from the state associated with the deal being struck.

Brady said he, the business director and the curriculum director will meet with tribal representatives and determine “responsibilities on both sides to support our Native American students.”

Brady said the current deal includes provisions to report to the tribe on how Native American students are doing, and provides Mohawk culture lessons in school and cultural sensitivity awareness. There is also affirmative action tied in to being Native educators to Massena.

“It comes with dollars attached to provide those services. The funding is based on the number of students we have, which going into [2017-2018] is 245 that have that certified number that live on the territory,” Brady said.

Once the tentative deal is drawn up, the Board of Education will vote on it.

Salmon River Central also has a Title VI contract.
