Massena Public Library awarded $617,738 state grant for boiler replacement

Posted

MASSENA — The Massena Public Library has been awarded $617,738 through the New York State Aid for Library Construction program to support its Warm Hearts, Warm Library boiler replacement project. The library applied for the state funding in August to replace its steam boiler with a modern, high-efficiency hot water boiler system.

Installed in 2002, the boiler is more than 24 years old and has become increasingly expensive to maintain. The system has required several emergency repairs in recent years, and its continued operation presents significant reliability concerns, particularly during the winter.

The replacement will help ensure a safe, comfortable and dependable facility for patrons and staff while reducing maintenance and utility costs.

“This grant award is an important step toward protecting the future of the Massena Public Library,” said Krista Briggs, library director. “We are grateful to New York state for this critical support and to everyone in our community who has contributed to the project. We are asking residents, businesses and library supporters to help us complete the final phase of fundraising.”

Community support still needed

The total cost of the project is estimated at $925,000. To date, the library has secured $736,188, including the $617,738 state award, $79,850 raised through community fundraising, $25,000 from the library’s capital fund and a $13,600 pledge from state Assemblymember Scott Gray. The remaining $188,812 is still needed to close the gap.

The library continues to seek additional grants and donations. Residents and supporters who wish to contribute may contact the library at kbriggs@ncls.org or make an online donation at https://massenapubliclibrary.org/warm-hearts-warm-library/.
