Students from Massena, Canton and Waddington have been nominated by Rep. Bill Owens to attend U.S. military service academies.
One of them, Kathryn Fanning of Canton, is nominated for two of the academies, The U.S. Air Force Academy and Annapolis, the U.S. Naval Academy.
Also nominated for the U.S. Naval Academy is Connor Paquin of Massena.
Nominated to attend West Point, the United States Military Academy, is Mary Young of Waddington.
Brendan Broderick of Massena is chosen to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
“Attending a U.S. service academy gives a student the opportunity to serve her or his country and receive a world class education at the same time,” said Owens. “I commend these students for choosing to pursue this path of extraordinary honor and selflessness. I am pleased to support their efforts in this regard and look forward to seeing them carry on the proud tradition of military service for their families and communities.”
Members of Congress may nominate students to attend one of the four U.S. Service Academies if those students meet certain eligibility requirements and submit a detailed application. The service academies that accept nominations are the Air Force, Army, Merchant Marine and the Navy.
Rep. Owens is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
