MASSENA -- The Board of Trustees is looking at changing parking on Bayley Road and Woodlawn Avenue.
Police Chief Mark LaBrake told the board that buses near Jefferson School can’t safely get to the school when cars are parked on Bayley opposite the school. He said he went and watched it first-hand after receiving complaints.
“I think we need to … possibly not have parking there during the school year or school hours to avoid a potentially tragic situation,” LaBrake said.
He says the crossing guards do what they can, but they have limits.
“I reached out to the school last year … and no response,” Trustee Tim Ahlfeld said, who is also on the street committee. “We’ll do what we see fit and they’ll just have to live with it.”
LaBrake also said the board needs to look at potentially restricting parking on Woodlawn Avenue near the Cedar Street intersection, which the trustees have discussed in the past.
“I don’t think a fire truck’s going to be able to make that corner” with cars parked in the street, LaBrake said.
