CANTON – A Madrid man has been arrested for allegedly causing serious injuries to his three-week-old child.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division arrested Shane N. Shortt, of Madrid, on Sept. 24 and charged him with second-degree assault (D Felony) and endangering the welfare of a child.

The arrest stems from a complaint received by the Sheriff’s Office on Sept. 20, from Canton-Potsdam Hospital regarding a three-week-old child brought to the hospital with an arm fracture and hematoma in both eyes.

The infant was subsequently transferred to Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital where medical staff additionally found 10 broken ribs.

Shortt, the child's father, was arraigned in Hermon Town Court by Judge Chris Velez and released under the supervision of probation. A no-contact order of protection was issued in favor of the child.
