Lopata leads six CU swimmers in UNYSCSA Day Four finals

Ithaca, NY - Freshman Gavin Lopata was one of six different members of the Clarkson University Swimming team to compete in the finals at the UNYSCSA Championship meet on Saturday night, finishing 11th overall in the 100 freestyle.

Overall, the Golden Knights concluded the annual championships with a total of 502.5 points as the men took 10th out of 15 teams with 322.5 points and the women came in 15th out of 16 squads with 180 points.

Lopata finished 12th in the preliminaries in the morning and then pushed up one spot to take 11th in the 'B' finals, closing out the event in 48.13 seconds. Junior Chris Bay also competed in the 'C' finals, improving upon his preliminary placement by two spots, taking 22nd in 48.63 seconds. John Cain (60) and Mike Palozzi (61) also participated in the prelims. On the women's side of the 100 freestyle, Sarah Mykins (58), Samantha Denning (60), Kendal Lazarus (62), Joanne Bechaz (65), Billie Hens (66) and Jelena Hadina (67) fell short of the finals.

In the 200 backstroke, Kyle Atkinson (36) and Mike Sarkisian (37) fell short of the finals on Saturday night, but three women were able to swim their way into the 'C' finals. Lauren Grasberger took 17th in both the prelims and 'C' finals, finishing in 2:14.04 and shaving more than a second off of her prelim time. Tiffany Catano came in 23rd in 2:18.52 and Sarah Halstead placed 24th in 2:22.33.

Sophomore Garry Dorn had one of the most impressive runs among Clarkson swimmers on Saturday, improving upon his seed time by more than 10 seconds in the preliminaries and then finishing 17th in the 'C' finals with a time of 2:13.38, another .31 seconds faster than his prelim time. Connor Maloney (26) and Adam Marciniak (42) came up short of swimming in the finals, as did Kayla Weckesser on the women's side as the sophomore took 26th in the morning preliminaries.

Freshmen Connor Koehler and Isabel Dengos came up short of participating in the finals but performed well in the preliminaries. Koehler came in 26th in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 18:32.39 and Dengos took 21st in the 3-meter dive.

Finally, Gavin Lopata, Sam Zwierzchowski, Connor Maloney and Chris Bay finished 10th in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:16.14 and Clarkson's women tied for 13th as the group of Tiffany Catano, Rachel Barclay, Sarah Halstead and Lauren Grasberger combined for a time of 3:52.27.
