Knights women's basketball doubles up crosstown rival Potsdam, 56-28

Potsdam, NY - Though it took a little while for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to get going, the Golden Knights defense more than made up for the initial shortcomings, forcing Potsdam State to commit 26 turnovers and holding the Bears to 22.4% shooting in a 56-28 win over at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-0 on the young season, while Potsdam dropped to 0-2. Clarkson will travel to compete in the Plattsburgh State Tournament this weekend.

Both teams were careless in the early going as neither team got a shot off for the first 95 seconds of the game, but Clarkson found a rhythm in the latter half of the first quarter and tallied 18 points, the most either team would record in any quarter in the entire game. However, the larger contributions in the game came on defense as Clarkson's swaming full-court press forced Potsdam into several mistakes. In fact, the Bears were forced into turnovers on nearly 40 percent of their first-half possessions (14 of 36), and that, combined with a 17.2% success rate from the floor (5-for-29), held Potsdam to just 10 first-half points.

With a 23-point advantage at the break, Clarkson was in control for the entire second half, extending the lead to 29 point on five occasions in the third quarter. By that point, the game was no longer in doubt and the Knights cruised to their 28-point win.

Ashley Loggins played just 24 minutes, but accumulated 14 points (7-for-8 shooting) with 10 rebounds, five steals and a pair of assists, while Madison Shea and Devin Sorell each kicked in 10 points. Tricia Loso came off the bench to score seven points on 3-for-3 shooting in just 10 minutes. For Potsdam, Katie LaVoie scored a team-best nine points, but took 12 shots and four free throw attempts to get there. Clarkson shot 48.9% from the floor in the game (23-for-47) and outrebounded the Bears 39-24. The 28 points allowed by Clarkson were the fewest since the team gave up 25 against Bard in February 2012, a stretch of 78 games.
