Knights softball match last season victory total through eight games

Clermont, FL - Sophomore Katie Pelton nearly doubled her career-high with 11 strikeouts in the opener and the Clarkson University Softball team set program marks for runs and hits in game two as the Golden Knights knocked down a pair of opponents on day five of their Florida trip.

The Golden Knights with six wins in eight games have already matched last season's win total which took 32 contests to reach. Clarkson beat Lancaster Bible College in the early morning 2-1 and the Golden Knights switched fields and mindset for the second game when they defeated Oswego State 12-2, pounding out 18 hits in the six-inning contest.

Scoring occurred early in the game against Lancaster Bible as the two starting pitchers eventually settled in and didn't allow a run past the second. Freshman Raeanna Dunn led off the first with a single and then stole second to get into scoring position, which was of little matter since Jamie Bridge tripled Dunn home with a shot to left-center. Bridge then came home on a deep sacrifice fly to right-center to give Clarkson a 2-0 lead. The Chargers responded with a run in the bottom of the second inning as Courtney Koser took a full-count pitch over the fence to lead off the frame. From that point on, however, neither team could muster much offensively. Pelton, who had a previous career-high of six strikeouts, struck out two after the Koser home run in the second, whiffed the side in the third and then struck out six more in the next three innings, giving up just three hits after the home run. Lancaster Bible would threaten in the sixth when Julia D'Arrigo doubled to left, but Pelton struck out the next three hitters she faced to end the inning.

Bridge went 2-for-3 with a run scored and another driven in for Clarkson, while the Chargers' four hits were spread out among four batters. Pelton allowed only four hits and a single run, walking two and striking out 11. Kelsey Collins whiffed seven in seven innings for Lancaster Bible, giving up five hits and just one walk.

In game two, both teams went down quietly in the first, but Clarkson woke up quickly and found its offensive groove. In the top of the second inning, Chelsea Elliott singled up the middle and her pinch-runner, MacKenzie Pelton, quickly came around to score on an error off a sacrifice bunt from Katelin Ferguson. Ferguson then scored on a passed ball, but Clarkson produced another threat when Erika Jensen singled and was followed by a hit from Katie Pelton. Bridget Woolley then singled home a run to make the score 3-0. The Lakers produced a run in the bottom half of the inning after a triple from Noelle White was followed by a single from Alexandria Connelly.

Clarkson added a run to its lead in the fourth when Summer Lancette forced in a run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch. Three more came across in the fifth as Clarkson batted around. Erika Jenseon doubled home Ali Schwenzfeier for the first run of the inning, and a bases loaded error allowed another run to score to give Clarkson six runs. Summer Lancette singled home another run to make the score 7-1 in the fifth, and the Knights put the game out of reach in their next at bat in the sixth when they once again batted around. In the sixth, five runs were plated on seven hits with the big blow coming off the bat of Erika Jensen, who tripled home a pair.

Jensen, Elliott, and Dunn each recorded three hits in the nightcap while Katie Pelton reached base in all four trips to the plate with two hits and a pair of walks. Jensen also drove in three and scored three times, accounting for half of Clarkson's runs. In the circle, Jamie Bridge scattered five hits and two walks in six innings, allowing only two earned runs.
