Lake Myrtle, FL – With impressive pitching performances from sophomore Pete Roma (Endicott, NY) and senior Jerry Coleman (Potsdam, NY), the Clarkson University Baseball team swept a doubleheader from Oswego State, 6-1 and 9-1, Saturday at the Lake Myrtle Baseball Complex.

The Golden Knights won their third straight game to improve to 3-1 overall, and the Knights will take on Sewanee on Sunday at 10:00 am.

In the opener, sophomore Pete Roma scattered five hits and allowed only an unearned run in earning his first career shutout. Clarkson scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and led throughout as David Wixted (Ballston Lake, NY) opened the frame with a line drive single to left center. Dan Lenney (Clifton Park, NY) delivered a bunt single and John Coleman followed with a single to center to score Wixted. After a sac bunt from Pete Clarke (Tully, NY), Scott Morrissey (Troy, NY) drove in another run with a sacrifice fly to center field to make the score 2-0. Jerry Coleman then lifted a pop fly to shortstop, but the sun created an error and allowed John Coleman to race home from second base. Freshman catcher Matt Jenack (Massena, NY), who went 3-for-3 with a walk in his first career start, made the Lakers pay for the mistake even more when he dropped a single in center field for a fourth run.

Oswego picked up its only run of the game on a single to center field which was played into a two-base error as Mike Stark raced around the bases on the miscue. Roma allowed three hits the rest of the way, and Clarkson tacked on two runs in the sixth inning when Morrissey added another sac fly and Jerry Coleman ripped a two-out single to right.

Jenack and Lenney each had three hits in the opener, while Wixted was 2-for-3.

In the second game, Jerry Coleman made his first start in two seasons on the mound, and threw five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits. Oswego mounted solid threats in the first and fifth innings, but each time Coleman was able to get the groundball or strikeout he needed to get out of the jams.

The Knights scored twice in the third inning to take the lead. Scott Morrissey started with a one-out single and Jerry Coleman added another hit to force a threat. Following a double-steal Bobby Derico (Watervliet, NY) punched a single to right to score one run, and Coleman came around on a passed ball.

Two innings later, Clarkson opened things up with a seven-run fifth to take control of the game. With runners on first and third, David Kinney (Mexico, NY) delivered a double down the left field line to score a run, and John Coleman was hit by a pitch to force in another two batters later. A sacrifice fly from Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) scored another run, and the ensuing throw to get Coleman at second base allowed another run to score as the toss sailed into center field. Justin Rebhun (East Greenbush, NY), Tim Beninati (Schoharie, NY), Jarrod Mattingly (Philadelphia, NY) and Jerry Coleman then delivered four straight hits to close out the offense in the inning.

Relieving Coleman in the sixth inning, freshman Evan Young (Ghent, NY) pitched the final two innings, allowing three hits and striking out two in two innings. Kinney went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Jerry Coleman had two hits in four at bats.
