MASSENA -- The Knights of Columbus Hall rang with songs welcoming spring and songs of patriotism last Friday evening, May 16, and Sunday, May 18, with a performance by the Holy Name of Jesus Academy Choir.

The choir, which consists of students in 8th through 12th grades, was “fantastic,” according to a Massena resident who attended. A wide variety of songs included our National Anthem and French, German and Swiss folk songs. The same Massena resident mentioned that her favorite was “La Fanfare du Printemps,” while another North Country resident said she enjoyed “Holla Hi” best.

Mrs. Amy Burns, who has a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, conducts the choir of more than 90 students. “At first, I was nervous,” Burns said. “I thought we didn’t have enough time. But the girls enjoyed singing and I had fun conducting, so in the end, we all had fun.”

The choir members weren’t the only ones who had fun. Everyone did. During the “Armed Forces Melody,” the audience was clapping along with the infectious beat, while the students sang and Burns accompanied them on piano.

“It was fun singing with everyone,” Alexandra, a boarding student from California, said. “During the practices, it was awesome with Mrs. Burns.”

The choir is part of the arts programs at The Holy Name of Jesus Academy, which purchased the Twin Rivers School Building in 2007. The Dominican Sisters, with their Motherhouse in Fanjeaux, France, converted it into an all-girls’ boarding school. They participate in the main community events and parades, and also give a helping hand at the community center every Thursday. Their motto is “Veritas,” which is “Truth,” and this they seek to spread through the community.

The “North Country Sings Spring Concert” was sponsored by Vino, Vidi, Vici, The Camelot Company, World’s Finest Chocolate, Brooks Washburn, Sullivan’s Office Supply and Mullarney’s.
