Knights Men's Soccer and Union play to scoreless draw

Potsdam, NY – A foul-riddled game between the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and Union College ended in a scoreless tie as the Golden Knights picked up another point in their quest to earn a conference post-season berth.

The Golden Knights currently reside in a tie for fourth in the Liberty League standings and have just Rensselaer remaining on the conference schedule. While Clarkson will be facing SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday, six other Liberty League teams will be playing conference games on Wednesday. If RIT and Rensselaer each win their games, the Knights will clinch a playoff spot, but that is the only scenario in which Clarkson will be in without results from the final game of the season on Saturday.

In the first 26 minutes of the game on Saturday, there were more yellow cards distributed than shots. Things finally picked up in the latter portion of the second half, including two hard shots from Union that sailed either wide or high, including a missile from Salvador Perez in the 35th minute that went just high of the crossbar.

In the second half, Clarkson had two good scoring chances go for naught. Mack Walton nearly connected on a header, but his shot hit the post at 72:10. About nine minutes later, Henry Gomez came close as well, and although his hard grounder got past the Union keeper, the ball carried several yards wide of the frame. Gomez again nearly scored in the first overtime with just a few minutes expired, but John Weitzman sprawled to his right to keep the game scoreless.

Clarkson finished with a 12-11 edge in shots and an overwhelming 10-2 advantage in corner kick chances. Riley McDonald finished with two saves for Clarkson, recording his third shutout in four games this year, while John Weitzman earned his shutout thanks to six saves.
