POTSDAM — An individual was taken into police custody after displaying a knife during one of two related altercations involving students outside Potsdam High School shortly after dismissal Friday, according to Potsdam Central School District Superintendent Jerry Griffin.
In a message to families, Griffin said the altercations occurred on the sidewalk outside the high school and involved two students and another individual who was not in school that day but walked onto campus in the afternoon.
School Resource Officer Darren Basford and high school administrators responded, and the situation was quickly brought under control, Griffin said. The Potsdam Police Department is investigating.
Griffin said there was no ongoing threat to students, staff or the school community related to the incidents.
He credited Basford, High School Principal Kristin Towne and Athletic Director and Dean of Students Zach Marcellus with responding immediately. He also thanked Officer Fink, Lt. Gates Schult, Chief Mike Ames and the Potsdam Police Department for their response.
Griffin praised Basford for his quick thinking and professionalism, saying he believed the officer's intervention prevented the situation from becoming more serious.
