John E. “Jack” Barto, 74, Massena

MASSENA -- John E. “Jack” Barto, age 74, passed away Thursday, December 28, 2023, at UVM Medical Center in Burlington, VT, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Phillips Memorial Home, 64 Andrews St. Massena. Friends and family may call on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. until the time of services with Rev. Judy Van Kenne at 5:00 p.m.

Burial with full military honors will take place on Thursday, January 4, 2024, in Pine Grove Cemetery, Norfolk at 12:00 p.m.


Jack was born in Olean, NY the son of Frederick and Esther (Johnson) Barto. He graduated in 1968 he entered the US Army in 1969 and was honorably discharged in 1972. He married Susan Servsis on May 24, 1969, at The Church of the Nativity in Cornwall, Ontario Canada. Jack was employed at Massena Electric Department as a lineman.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors, ice fishing, hunting, and visiting his hunting camp Diamond Sportsman’s Club in South Colton, NY.

Jack is survived by his mother, Ester; his loving wife of 54 years, Susan; their two children, John G. of Brasher, and Rene Barto of Massena; five grandchildren, Johnathan; Rachael, Owen, Arianna, and Aiden; two great-grandchildren, Brantly Barto, and Easton McDonald. His siblings; Gene and Connie Barto of Massena; Linda Barto of Colchester, VT, along with several nieces and nephews.
Jack was predeceased by his father Frederick E. Barto.
