CANTON – The Gouverneur town code enforcer has been hired to serve as an interim codes officer for Canton.
Mike McQuade, who has served as the Gouverneur codes officer for the last nine years, will work in Canton for 8 hours a week, said town Supervisor David Button Monday night.
Button said the town board passed a resolution to hire McQuade after a 30-minute executive session at a special town board meeting Monday night, Oct. 30.
McQuade will be paid $50 an hour, Button said.
The interim code enforcer will have office hours at the municipal building Wednesday and Friday from 2-6 p.m.
He will serve as an interim enforcer until a code enforcement officer can be hired officially through the county’s Human Resources and Civil Service Administration. The position is a Civil Service job and as such, applicants are obligated to take a Civil Service examination.
The county held its latest examination for a codes enforcement officer in September. The county Human Resources department is in the process of reviewing the results from the exam and could produce a new list of applicants in 2 to 3 months. The town will then be able to canvas the applicants on the list who completed the exam to find a likely candidate.
Former town code enforcer Russell “Rusty” Lawrence IV resigned from the position Oct. 6 to work in a similar capacity with the town of Oswegatchie.
