To the author of “Caving to Pressure” (Sound Off, May 1-7 issue): The PCS music department and friends are “bullies” for fighting to get a music position back, or so you say. If they had been fighting for a sports position would they still be “bullies”? What about the parents and students that asked the Board to keep Latin classes? Are they “bullies”? And what about people every day who peacefully protest things that they view as not being right? Martin Luther King, Jr. marched on Washington for something he believed in. Did the president “cave to peer pressure”? Was Martin Luther King, Jr. a “bully”? The answer is no. In all of those situations the people were practicing their Constitutional right to free speech and assembly. We live in America. We have Democracy. If the people don’t like something, they let the elected body know and they fix it. That’s how the system is supposed to work. It worked in Potsdam. If you don’t like it, you too can come to a Board meeting and state your views. But don’t condemn the people who worked for what they believe in.
