POTSDAM – A balanced scoring attack that saw four players score in double figures led the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team to a 64-54 Liberty League victory over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights moved to 5-14 overall and 2-7 in the Liberty League to keep alive their chances at a conference playoff berth, while the Brewers fell to 11-9 overall and 5-4. Clarkson hosts St. Lawrence on Tuesday in the middle of its five-game homestand.

Vassar started with the first basket of the game in what would turn into a somewhat sloppy first half, but the Golden Knights nailed a 3-pointer just a minute later and held the lead for the remainder of period.

The Knights were up just one point, 10-9, at 11:54, but enjoyed a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to take a double-digit lead. Vassar closed the gap to six points, but Lauren Pluchino (Liverpool, NY) responded with a 3-pointer and Noelle Miller (Hamburg, NY) followed with a lay up to return Clarkson’s significant advantage.

With a last second lay in off a rebound, Brittany Parks brought the Brewers to within seven at the break.

Parks led all scorers with eight points, but Clarkson had three players score six points or more in the first half, led by Carey Turner (Clifton Park, NY) who had seven points in 11 minutes off the bench.

Starting the second half, Vassar pulled to within three (34-31), but that was as close as Vassar would get as the Knights were able to work a solid inside-outside game on offense. Clarkson shot 52.3 percent from the floor, while the Brewers made just 25.0 percent of their shots from the field.

What kept Vassar in the contest was its overwhelming showing at the free throw line, where the team went 19-for-28, taking advantage of early foul issues by Clarkson in the second half. However, the Knights started to catch up late when the Brewers were forced to foul in an attempt to cut the double-digit deficit.

Four players finished in double figures for the Knights, led by Carey Turner, who had 13 points. Katie Goldberg (Stowe, VT) added 12 points, shooting 4-for-6 from the 3-point line, while Chrissy Scanlon (Queensbury, NY) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Pluchino also had 10 points for Clarkson.

Brittany Parks had a game-high 24 points to lead the Brewers, but shot 6-for-19 from the field. Cydni Matsuoka tossed in 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Hannah Senftleber also completed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Vassar.
