CANTON -- St. Lawrence County will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, May 22 to give residents the opportunity to learn about the 20th round of its First Time Homebuyer Program.
The hearing is at 7 p.m. in Room 255 of the County Courthouse, 48 Court St. Staff from the county Planning Office will provide an overview of a $621,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded to assist 27 income-eligible house buyers in purchasing their first houses.
The program helps low to moderate income households who are having difficulty saving enough to buy a first house. The county expects to provide 27 households with purchase, “buydown” and closing cost assistance, and minor repairs to the purchased house.
To receive financial help, participating households must meet a lender’s underwriting criteria, and complete training to learn about household budgeting, the mortgage application process, the day-to-day challenges of homeownership, and caring for and maintaining a home.
People with earning low to moderate incomes who are interested are invited to attend the public hearing to learn about the project. People with special needs who could benefit from the project are particularly encouraged to attend.
Those who cannot attend may contact the Planning Office to receive written material from the public hearing.
