First female firefighter in St. Lawrence County, first female Brasher Town Board member Margaret Burns to be laid to rest Wednesday

HELENA – Margaret Burns, 64, the Town of Brasher’s first female board member and the first female firefighter in St. Lawrence County, will be buried tomorrow.

Burns died Saturday at her home with family present.

A Mass of Christian Burial and Celebration of Life will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Church, Brasher Falls. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Burns was born in Massena and went to Madrid-Waddington Central School and the Massena School of Business. She married Francis Burns in 1969 in Massena.

She worked as a nurse’s aide at Massena Memorial Hospital and the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center before joining the office staff at W.B. Goodnow Agency in Winthrop, retiring from there in June 2012.

She was a member of the Helena Fire Department, and earned status as an interior firefighter. She served as department treasurer and was an auxiliary member.

She served on the Brasher Falls Central School Board of Education; LBSH Board of Directors; first female of the Brasher Town Board; a member of the Democratic Club and Tri Town Trailblazers Snowmobile Club. She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Hogansburg and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.

Visiting hours at the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop are today from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.

She wished that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Lawrence Central Boy’s Varsity Hockey, Attn: Tim Wagner, P. O. Box 307, Brasher Falls, NY 13613; or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, Inc., 6805 US Hwy 11, Potsdam, NY 13676.
