CANTON -- Dry conditions have led to 30-day state of emergency being declared in St. Lawrence County that will be in effect through July 26, according to county Emergency Services.
Officials say this is due to due conditions resulting in numerous out-of-control grass and brush fires throughout the county. Emergency Services says the conditions threaten the public safety of the citizens of St. Lawrence County.
St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators Chair Joseph Lightfoot has issued the following Executive Order:
"As of Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 6pm, no person shall intentionally set an open fire throughout St. Lawrence County, with the exception of a camp fire where the camp fires are in fire rings that confine and contain the camp fire. This order supersedes all burning permits and will extend for five (5) days through Thursday, July 2, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. unless rescinded or extended."
An exemption has been granted to fire departments involved in organized training with immediately available charged hand lines, Emergency Services said.
People with questions can contact County Emergency Services Director Matthew Denner at 315.408.8444.
