State forest rangers say they helped a Winthrop woman who got lost while hiking on Mount Ampersand in Harrietstown on Wednesday.

The 66-year-old woman was hiking with a 68-year-old man from Malone and they lost their way while descending the mountain, the Department of Environmental Conservation said.

A DEC news release did not name either person.

“They had bushwhacked for approximately four hours before calling for help,” DEC said. “Forest rangers responded, located the pair by a small stream near the base of the mountain and escorted them out without further incident.”

The incident was over by 8:30 p.m., DEC said.
