POTSDAM -- The Crane Wind Ensemble and Crane Jazz Ensemble will perform during Family Weekend Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall.

In their first concert of the year, the Crane Wind Ensemble will present "Musical Destinations." Composers love writing about places, as it gives them the opportunity not only to "set the scene," but to also relay in music how each particular places makes them feel.

Aaron Copland's "El Salon Mexico" is his impression of, and homage to the great dance hall in Mexico City. John Philip Sousa wrote "Manhattan Beach" as his signature tune during his residences at the famed resort.

In "Sanctuary," Frank Ticheli provides the listener a work that explores solitude and solace. To close the program, Michael Daugherty's rollicking "Niagara Falls" explores this iconic locale and its environs.

The Crane Jazz Ensemble will perform "Kid Charlemagne," written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and arranged by Mike Tomaro, as well as "Afro Blue," written by Mongo Santamaria and arranged by Michael Philip Mossman. T

he jazz ensemble will also play "My One and Only Love," by Robert Mellin and Guy Wood, as arranged by Mark Taylor, and will close out their performance with "Hunting Wabbits" by Gordon Goodwin.
