OGDENSBURG -- Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center will lay-off 11 transcriptionists, but each has been offered a position at Nuance, a Massachusetts firm contracted to take on the work.

Hospital spokeswoman Laura Shea said the change will reduce expenses for the hospital and improve the quality of service.

"It's not offshore, it's based out of Massachusetts in Burlington, just outside of Boston," she said.

Shea did not share details regarding the contract, but said all of the employees were offered a position with Nuance and would be able to perform their duties from home. Shea was unsure whether all of the employees accepted the new positions.

Shea said the changeover would allow for faster turnarounds of transcriptions and reduce the expense of software upgrades.

Transcriptionist, compile information taken from the doctor to provide details regarding patient visits and added to medical files.

Shea said the change takes effect Sept. 10.
