Freshman Greg Lewis (Mars, PA) was solid in goal for the Clarkson University Hockey team with 32 saves, but offensive production continues to elude the Golden Knights who suffered a 3-1 loss to 14th-ranked Yale in ECAC Hockey action before 2,297 fans at Cheel Arena on Saturday night.

Clarkson, which suffered its fifth consecutive home loss, will look to break out of its longest losing skid of the season when it hosts archrival St. Lawrence University to close out a six-game home stand on Saturday, January 19. The Knights stand at 4-12-5 overall and own a 3-5-1 ECAC Hockey slate.

Despite a hard-working effort, Clarkson never led against Yale (9-4-3, 5-3-1) and trailed 2-0 late in the contest before putting a scare into the nationally-ranked Bulldogs.

With 3:10 remaining in regulation, the Knights pulled Lewis for the extra attacker, and the move paid off when sophomore Joe Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) scored off a shot in the slot at 17:23 after taking a pass from sophomore defenseman Sam Labrecque (Granby, QUE) during a delayed penalty. Freshman Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) also assisted. Clarkson had its chances to tie the game on the ensuing power play, but could not connect for the equalizer before taking a penalty to negate the man-advantage opportunity.

Yale, which defeated St. Lawrence 5-3 on Friday, completed its weekend sweep in the North Country with an empty-net, power-play goal from Clinton Bourbonais with 30 seconds remaining.

Both goalies stood tall through a scoreless opening 20 minutes with Lewis posting 16 first-period stops, while Yale’s Jeff Malcolm turned aside 14 Clarkson shots.

Yale broke the stalemate with a pair of goals just over five minutes apart early in the second frame. Jesse Root knocked in a shot from the top of the crease with just 19 seconds remaining on a Bulldogs’ power play for the game’s first goal at 6:24. Andrew Miller and Kenny Agostino picked up the assists.

At 11:47, Yale struck again on Kenny Agostino’s ninth goal of the season as he connected off assists from Rob O’Gara and Nicholas Weberg on a shot from between the circles.

Yale outshot the Knights 35-33. Malcolm made 32 saves for the Bulldogs. Clarkson, which saw its stretch of games without a scoring a power-play goal extend to eight, went 0-of-5 on the power play. Yale was 2-of-5 with the man-advantage.
