Canton financial issues key, Ashley says

To the Editor:

Constituents have asked me what is the most important issue for our village government. I believe it is our financial situation. As trustee, I have advocated: no tax increase, cut spending, debt reduction, fair contracts with employee health insurance contributions and an increased commitment for economic development. Long term financial planning has been the goal of the committees and department leaders.

With due diligence this year’s budget passed with no tax increase on the 35 percent of property owners that pay 100 percent of the taxes; no water/sewer rate increase; cut department spending by 10 percent and paying off the fire department debt.

Attending monthly steering committee meetings for three years evidences my commitment to economic development. Concerned about the Jubilee property, I asked for us to communicate with owner Garry Cohen, who is from New York City. A letter was sent, a phone conference and a tour of his properties transpired. Personal communications by phone, email and even offering to meet him in New York City each time I visit my son has also occurred.

In support of the Canton Community Action and Waterfront Development Plans, we also have started a marketing outreach project and the village board reinvested $29,000 in a small business development fund.

By practice, trustees serve on committees. If elected mayor, I will facilitate and have full trust in the integrity of the process. To add value, I have asked our Town Supervisor Dave Button to meet semi-monthly to allow for consistent collaboration between the municipalities. It truly is about being focused on the people that live, work and visit here.

Please vote Tuesday, Nov. 5. Thank you.
