In response to “Breastfeeding in Church,” which appeared in the Sept. 2 - 8 issue of North Country This Week: While visiting family in Louisville over Labor Day weekend, I sat down with the latest issue of North Country This Week, something I really enjoy whenever I visit from my home in Vermont. It saddened me to read the Sound Off regarding breastfeeding in church. I tunderstand that not all folks understand the importance of breastfeeding in raising healthy well-nourished kids. How wonderful if the writer could learn to understand the reality that a breastfeeding mother is the furthest thing from what s/he calls a flasher, and is simply doing the most important job of nourishing her child, an age old practice that I'm sure Mary and Jesus enjoyed, and one that produced what quite a few people consider a pretty wonderful young man. I guess I can understand that this writer seems to be uncomfortable with natural human behavior. There are folks who were raised to be ashamed of the natural human body functions, which is unfortunate. But where this writer truly crossed the line is when s/he called breastfeeding in public pornography. Shame on you. I hope you can find a place in your Christian heart to support all well-meaning young parents who are truly doing their very best and providing a good start for their amazing babies. How about celebrating that this new child is in church with his/her family and not crying, which most would consider much more disruptive to the service.
