ALFRED -- The SUNY Potsdam women’s soccer team posted their second straight shutout, defeating host Alfred University 2-0 in the first rnd of the Alfred Tournament. Junior forward Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y./Heuvelton) and freshman defender Tannicia Joseph (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) each had goals for the Bears.
Potsdam (2-0) had to overcome adversity when they lost starting freshman goalkeeper Katrina Rowland (Churchville, N.Y./Churchville-Chili) early in the match. However, freshman goalie Erika Hoad (Watkins Glen, N.Y./Watkins Glen) stepped in and the Bears didn’t miss a beat. The two newcomers combined for five saves. Potsdam scored at the 36:53 mark.
It was a thing of beauty to first year Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak.
“The last couple of days in practice we really worked on making near and far post runs and that’s how we got our first goal,” said Misiak.
Sophomore Jackie Miller (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) set up Joseph for her first career goal giving the Bears a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Johnson found the back of the net for the game’s final score, her third of the season.
Alfred goalkeeper Ashley Frazell had 3 saves for the Saxons (0-1).
“I was happy with the outcome and hope we can carry the momentum on to tomorrow’s match” said Misiak.
Potsdam will take on the Eagles of Juniata College tomorrow at noon.
