POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (12-4-2, 5-2-1 SUNYAC) fell to No. 12 SUNY Geneseo (13-1-1, 7-1) 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Bears still clinch a home playoff game thanks to a Plattsburgh victory over Brockport. Potsdam sophomore goalie Delphine Léonard (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College Prep) matched a career-high with 10 saves.
The Blue Knights showed high energy early and sophomore midfielder Domenica Piccoli (East Northport, N.Y./John Glenn) tested Léonard 10 minutes into the contest, but she handled the line drive easily. The middle of the period saw most of the action in the midfield, but Geneseo eventually tilted the field toward the Bears net. At 32:35, freshman midfielder Ellie Gregory (Commack, N.Y./Commack) lofted a long cross from the left side that Piccoli headed in at the right post. Potsdam generated its best pressure of the half in the final four minutes. With just over two minutes remaining, Bears junior midfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) hustled to keep the ball from going out of play and fed senior captain Jaci Morr (Monroe, Mich./Monroe). Morr then curled a shot wide of the left post. Less than a minute later, junior midfielder Rylie Murray (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) fired a rebound on goal, but Blue Knights junior goalie Emily Janiszewski (Buffalo, N.Y./Orchard Park) made the save. The score was unchanged at the half.
Potsdam started strong in the second half, moving the ball well and pressuring Geneseo's defense. However, the Bears couldn't crack Janiszewski and momentum shifted back in the Blue Knights' favor. At 72:15, Piccoli sent a perfect pass to Gregory at the left side of the net and she knocked home all the insurance Geneseo needed. The Blue Knights didn't let up after the goal, but didn't solve Léonard again.
Janiszewski finished with three saves to earn the shutout.
Depending on tomorrow's outcomes, Potsdam can finish either third or fourth in the SUNYAC standings. Either way, the Bears are guaranteed a home playoff game on Saturday, October 28.
Potsdam hosts Brockport tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. Prior to the contest, seniors Samantha Hubinsky (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Gens Falls), Amanda Lingenfelter (Alexandria Bay, N.Y./Alexandria), Morr and Morgan Robbins (Cape Vincent, N.Y./Thousand Islands) will be honored.
