POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam women's lacrosse team (3-8) outscored SUNY Canton (5-6) 7-1 in the second half to close out a 14-5 victory on Friday night. Senior captain Murphy Newman (Canton, N.Y./Berkshire School) led the Bears with five goals and two assists. With the seven points, she moved past Bailey Weigel '15 into fifth place on the program's all-time scoring list with 149 points.
Fellow senior captain Katie Lapinski (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) had two goals and three assists, while sophomore midfielder Cayla O'Connor (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) recorded two goals, an assist, four ground balls and five draw controls. Sophomore goalie Katie Longamore (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) made 10 saves for her third career victory.
O'Connor opened the scoring at the 27:28 mark with an assist from Lapinski. Lapinski then netted two straight to give Potsdam a 3-0 lead at 19:03 of the first half. Junior attack Rachael Huntley (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) assisted on the second. Canton countered with goals from freshman defender Megan Lynch (Antwerp, N.Y./Indian River) and senior midfielder Theresa DiMartin (Oneonta, N.Y./Mohawk Valley C.C.) to close within 3-2 at 12:56. The teams alternated each of the next four goals for a 5-4 contest at 2:47. Lapinski set up Newman at 9:31 and Newman fed freshman attack Alli Stark (Walworth, N.Y./Gananda) for a man-up tally at 4:23. Senior midfielder Michaela Cole (Parishville, N.Y./Parishville-Hopkinton) and Newman scored the final two goals of the half to begin a 9-0 Potsdam run. The Bears led 7-4 at the break.
Newman scored three times in the second half. Senior attack Nicole Damon (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), Stark, junior attack Morgan Cook (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) and O'Connor accounted for the other four Potsdam goals. Roos sophomore attack MaryClare Bowes (Irondequoit, N.Y./Irondequoit) closed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 1:25.
Senior goalie Becca Kieffer (Lee Center, N.Y./Rome Free Academy) made six saves for Canton. Sophomore goalie Tatum Walber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) allowed a goal in the final 5:44 for Potsdam.
The Bears outshot the Roos 25-18 and finished with an 18-17 edge in ground balls.
Potsdam is back in action on Wednesday, when the Bears host the SUNY New Paltz at 3 p.m.
