POTSDAM, N.Y.—Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) hit a two-run home run to lift the SUNY Potsdam softball team (8-11, 1-1 SUNYAC) to a 7-5 victory over SUNY Geneseo (10-12, 3-3) in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. It was the Bears' first win over the Blue Knights since 2004. Geneseo took game one 3-1.

The Blue Knights struck quickly in the opener. Freshman centerfielder Alyssa Persich (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) reached on an error to lead off the game and came around to score on a balk. Two batters later, freshman leftfielder Danni Napoli (Wading River, N.Y./Riverhead) hit her third homer of the season over the left field fence and Geneseo led 2-0 after one. Senior second baseman Jenna Phillips (Eden, N.Y./Eden) led off the top of the second with an infield single and came around to score on a ground out to make it 3-0. Potsdam struck back in the bottom of the third inning. Junior shortstop Jordan Ott (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) doubled to center with one out and later scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 3-1. The pitchers got stronger as the game progressed and shut down the offenses the rest of the way.

Geneseo senior pitcher Makayla Moore (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) (5-4) went the distance, allowing one earned run on four hits, while striking out 10. Sophomore Sami Hubinsky (East Glens Falls, N.Y./SUNY Adirondack) also pitched all seven for Potsdam. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits. Hubinsky fanned two.

The finale started similarly. Blue Knights senior third baseman Cat Krok (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) drove in the first two runs of the contest with a single up the middle in the top of the first. Geneseo then tacked on a run on a ground out for a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Hubinsky hit a two-out triple and then scored on an error to close the gap to 3-1 after one. Sophomore shortstop Emily Martin knocked in the Blue Knights' fourth run with a single and Persich scored later on the play to make it 5-1 after one and a half.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah) drove in Ott and freshman center fielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) with a two-out single get Potsdam within 5-3 after two.

Dougherty weaved her way out of jams over the next five shutout innings. Geneseo had a runner at third with one out in the top of the third before the sophomore hurler recorded her first of four strikeouts and got a weak pop up to end the inning.

The Bears tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Ott and Hubinsky reached on singles. Senior captain Katie Marsman (Wantagh, N.Y./Wyoming Seminary) followed with an RBI single to make it 5-4. After a walk to senior third baseman Samantha Cohn (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) to load the bases, Hubinsky scored on a wild pitch to knot the score at 5-5.

Geneseo placed another runner at third with two outs in the top of the fifth before Dougherty struck out sophomore pinch hitter Tori Fahie (Center Moriches, N.Y./Center Moriches) to end the threat.

Dougherty led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and two batters later, Ott drove the ball over the right center field fence to make it 7-5 Bears.

In the top of the sixth, Dougherty worked around an error and a hit to strand another Blue Knight runner at second base.

Defense sealed the victory for Potsdam in top of the seventh. Phillips led off the inning with a sinking line drive into right center field. Falsion dove to her left and snatched ball out of the air for the first out. Marsman dug a throw out of the dirt to retire junior right fielder Marisa Motisi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) for the second out. Senior captain Alexis Lerman (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) then ended the contest by handling a hard smash off the bat of Geneseo senior pinch hitter Courtney Budynas (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima).

Doughery improved to 3-4 after allowing four earned runs on nine hits and a walk. Sophomore Olivia Furness (Campbell, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) (2-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits, a walk and two strikeouts in the final two innings. Freshman Taylor Moore (Stillwater, N.Y./Stillwater) started the contest, allowing five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. She struck out four. Persich allowed a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

Ott finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and the two RBI. Hubinsky was also 3-for-4 with two runs. Brace went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Marsman added a 2-for-3 performance and an RBI.

The Bears are only a third of the way done with their weekend. They host Brockport for two at noon tomorrow and Oneonta for two at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
