POTSDAM, N.Y.—SUNY Potsdam men's basketball player Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn, N.Y. / George Westinghouse Vocational) has been named the State University of New York Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 6.
Pierce led the Bears to a 1-1 record during a tough non-conference slate. The senior posted a career-high 30 points in an exciting 86-80 comeback win over Manhattanville College. Pierce nearly missed a double-double performance and hit several key shots in the contest. The Brooklyn native then scored 23 points to put his team in contention with the No. 10 ranked Ramapo Roadrunners. He averaged 26.5 points and eight rebounds per game on the weekend.
This year, Potsdam's captain leads his team in scoring with 17.5 ppg, steals (24), and is second in rebounds (5.7). Pierce is currently in sole procession of 15th place on the Bears' all-time scoring list with 1190 points. He is only 83 points shy of cracking the top 10 in career scoring. Also, the senior has amassed 608 rebounds for his career, which puts him 25 boards away from becoming one of the 10 best Potsdam rebounders.
The Bears (4-6, 1-3 SUNYAC) hit the road as they resume SUNYAC play with Brockport and Geneseo this weekend. Potsdam takes on the Golden Eagles at 8 p.m. on Friday and the Knights at the 4 p.m. on Saturday.
