Bears cross country wraps up regular season with strong showing

GENEVA, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's and women's cross country teams closed out the regular season in strong fashion at the Cross Country Only Championships hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges on Saturday afternoon. The Bears men finished fourth led by a 12th place overall finish from freshman Anthony Pelella (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill), who crossed the finish line with an 8K time of 27:49. Junior Brittany Englert (New York Mills, N.Y./New York Mills) guided the women to fifth place, finishing 20th overall with a 5K time of 21:10. Clarkson University garnered the team titles in both races.

Freshman John Weed (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) placed 16th in 28:19 and senior Kevin Johnson (Camden, N.Y./Camden) followed in 29:37. Sophomore Ben Shelton (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) ran a time of 29:48 and fellow sophomore Anthony Perri (Mt. Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) finished in 31:15. Junior Ryan Sullivan (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) and sophomore Christopher Cruz (Albany, N.Y./Albany) rounded out the men with times of 31:52 and 32:11, respectively.

Senior Hannah Groshner (Wayland, N.Y. / Wayland-Cohocton) was 24th with a time of 21:23 and freshman Marie Amell (Potsdam, N.Y./Potsdam) was just 22 seconds behind her (21:55.1). Sophomore Catherine Varriano (Staten Island, N.Y./Susan E. Wagner) and junior Keagan Anderson (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) were next in 21:55.6 and 23:27. Juniors Miriam Cisse (Manhattan, N.Y./A. Philip Randolph) and Sarah LaPorta (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem East) closed out the day in 23:40 and 23:54.

The Bears have next weekend off before they run in the SUNYAC Championships at SUNY Plattsburgh on Halloween.
