Buena Vista, VA – Host Southern Virginia University scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to overcome a 9-5 deficit earning a 10-9 victory v. the SUNY Canton baseball team on Friday.
The Knights (7-7) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single and RBI double. The Roos (0-4) responded with one run each in the second and third innings on a Joseph Dwy sacrifice fly and a Collin Lynk RBI ground out.
Canton added a pair of runs in the fourth on a Brian Santana 2 RBI double to left field. The Roos saw the hot bats continue as Brandon Bautista singled home Brett Hoberman in the fifth and Travis Schindler and Wilson Matos produced an RBI double and triple, respectively, in the sixth. Bautista hit the Roos first round tripper of the season with a solo shot to center in the seventh and Lynk plated Schindler on a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
The Knights brought two runners across in the eighth on an RBI single and RBI double and added five runs in the ninth culminating with a walk-off three run homer from Cole Critchfield.
Matos and Bautista posted three hits each for the Roos as Matos finished with a triple and pair of base hits and Bautista homered. Schindler and Hoberman posted a pair of doubles each, while Lynk and Brian Santana drove in two runs each.
Jake Vierno struck out four batters giving up just five hits and three earned runs in the no-decision over 6.1 innings, while Zack Swartz took the loss giving up one run on one hit in 0.1 innings.
Jonathan Hodges earned the win for SVU not allowing a single hit with one strike out and one walk in 1.2 innings.
These teams will have a rematch on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
