Barbara A. Cary, 42, Potsdam

POTSDAM - Barbara A. Cary, 42, of Potsdam passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9th, 2023 with close family by her side.

Barbara or Barbie (as she was known growing up), was born October 25, 1981, in Potsdam. Barbara was the daughter of Geoffrey Cary and Catherine Mallette.

Barbara played Varsity Football her senior year at Potsdam High School in which she was the first female to join the football team and was all-star athlete.

Barbara graduated in 2000 and then went on to attend SUNY Canton for accounting and liberal arts.

Barbara worked in various retail establishments over the years before becoming ill.

On October 2, 2010, she married Michael Steenberg at the Potsdam United Methodist Church; the couple was separated.

She enjoyed fishing, ice skating and loved spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Barbara is survived by her mother, Catherine (Barry) Orologio, siblings, Jessica Mallette, Geoffrey Cary Jr., Melissa Orologio (Brandon Terrance), Melinda Orologio and Ashlee (Joshua) Forbes, her step-mother Linda Cary, paternal grandmother Joan Cary, as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins (especially Skyler and Landon).

Barbara was predeceased by her father Geoffrey Cary, brother, Jason Cary, paternal grandfather George Cary and maternal grandparents Richard and June Mallette.

There will be a calling hour on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton, to be followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am located in Bayside Cemetery, Potsdam.
