Dwight W. Gibson, 83, Norwood

NORWOOD – A Mass of Christian Burial for Dwight W. Gibson, 83, a resident of 47 Spring Street, Norwood, will be held on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Church in Norwood with Rev. Raymond Moreau presiding. 

Burial will follow the services in the Riverside Cemetery, Norwood.  Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. 

Dwight passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, April 27, 2024, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital with family at his side.

Dwight is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Jarvis Gibson, Norwood; two sons, William and Kathy Gibson, Norfolk; Jonathan and Jamie Gibson, Edwards; his beloved grandchildren, Zachary and Megan Gibson, Hannah Gibson, Ryan Gibson (Paige Brooks) and Marlow Gibson; five step-grandchildren, Aiden Keddy, Katelyn Bean (Nate Gonyou), Drew Bean, David Webster and Daniel Webster; two great-grandchildren, Bennett and Brady Gibson as well as a new expected great-grandson in August; his step great-grandchildren, Brently Lucey, Kinsley and Bradley Gonyou; his brother, Lyndon and Carolyn Gibson, Norwood and a sister-in-law, Carol Gibson, Sarasota, FL as well as several nieces and nephews.  Dwight is also survived by his extended family of Edward and Gloria Jarvis, Massena; Bernard and Sharon Jarvis, Norwood and Marion Jarvis Clark, Norwood whom Dwight considered his own family.  Dwight was pre-deceased by his parents, an infant son, Jason Edward Gibson in 1973, two brothers, Wayne and Brian Gibson and a sister-in-law, Nancy Gibson.

 Born at home in Norwood on December 12, 1940, to the late Lloyd and Muriel Carpenter Gibson, Dwight graduated from Norwood-Norfolk Central School and married Patricia Jarvis Gibson on May 27, 1967, at St. Andrew’s Church in Norwood with Rev. Msgr. Francis McGuire presiding. 

Dwight worked at ALCOA in Massena for 38 years at the West Smelter Central Maintenance as an electrician. 

Dwight was a communicant of St. Andrew’s Church, Norwood and the Church of the Visitation, Norfolk; a member of the Norwood Fire Department for 62 ½ years, a director of the Riverside Cemetery Association, Norwood; a member of the Meet and Eat Group of ALCOA retirees where he enjoyed many friendships over the years, and a past director and President of the ALCOA 25 year Club for 17 years; past director of the Norfolk-Norwood Minor Hockey Association and a Life Member of the St. Lawrence County Fire Chiefs Association. 

In his spare time, Dwight enjoyed attending the sporting events for his sons and grandchildren and working the concession stands for Little League Baseball and the Norfolk-Norwood Minor Hockey Association. 

He looked forward to spending time at the fire station each morning with caring friends, John Upham and Charlie Colbert and other fellow firemen.
