The nationally-ranked #21 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team scored two goals late in the second half to defeat Hobart 2-0 in the Liberty League opener for both teams played on Cozzens Field this afternoon. The Saints improve to 5-1-0 overall, while the Statesmen are now 4-4-0 this season.

The first period was evenly played and the score remained 0-0 at halftime. Hobart had one of its best scoring chances in the 66th minute. Clint Dunn received a cross on the right side of the net and hit a hard shot on net, but St. Lawrence goalkeeper Aaron Costello made a diving save to deflect the ball with his fingertips to preserve the 0-0 tie. Just under five minutes later, Zico Gaeffke broke by his defender for a one-on-one with Costello, who again came through to make the save.

It wasn't until the 75th minute that St. Lawrence was able to break through. Christian Barral-Arteta fired a shot on goal that was initially saved by Hobart keeper Mike Lucas. Saints' captain Andrew Bednarsky, however, gathered the rebound and was able to put his quick shot into the back of the net for the game-winner and his second goal of the season.

In the 85th minute, Morgan Smith added to the Saints' lead as he broke through the Hobart back line and chipped in an unassisted goal for his third of the season.

St. Lawrence held a 12-8 edge in total shots and a 4-1 advantage in corners. Costello finished with four saves in the game for the Saints, while Lucas stopped three shots for the Statesmen.
