As I traveled around the village of Potsdam early this Sunday morning, I couldn’t help but notice the many cars parked on the streets and the many parking tickets attached to those cars’ windshields. As it was a weekend morning and the cars were parked outside of college rental housing, I assumed the cars belonged to college students, some of whom may have been in no condition to drive home last night. By not driving home, some of those college students made the responsible choice to keep themselves and others safe. Their reward for their show of responsibility is a parking ticket? Does an overnight parking ticket promote continued responsible nighttime driving behavior? I say it’s time to get rid of the village overnight street parking ban, at least during the non-snowy seasons. Ticketing cars parked overnight is only a revenue source for the village & police department but in my opinion serves no other purpose.
