An anticipated reduction in state highways aid will result in the county Highway Department postponing several projects this year.

The St. Lawrence County legislature on Monday, July 6 voted to move $300,000 from a bridge project to paving in order to complete this year’s road work.

“With the CHIPs funding … to fund highway projects, we are being cut approximately $1.06 million from what the 2019 budget was to the 2020 budget,” County Highway Superintendent Don Chambers told the legislature’s Finance Committee last month. “In doing so, that’s going to facilitate, unfortunately, reducing a few road projects within the county.”

He made the comments at a meeting where the committee passed a resolution that went on to the full board and was made official July 6.

Chambers last month said the county will pave 23 miles of road this year instead of 27.

Postponed paving projects include County Route 10 in Rossie, County Route 20 in Hermon and County Route 54 in Lawrence. Another project to fix the shoulders on County Route 51 in Lawrence will also be postponed.

Chambers noted that numerous paving, culvert and bridge repair projects are still slated for this summer.

At the June Finance Committee meeting, Chambers said paving projects planned for this year include County Route 11 in DePeyster; County Route 15 between US Route 11 and Old Canton Road; County Route 14 Canton between State Route 68 toward Morley; County Route 10 Lisbon; County Route 28 near the County Route 27 intersection; County Route 49 from O’Brien Road to County Route 38; County Route in 55 Helena toward North Lawrence; County Route 27 Clare/Pierrepont; part of County Route 24 in Fowler; and part of County Route 25 Russell in the Pink Schoolhouse area.
