St. Lawrence County Planning Office reminding property owners of deadline to add land to ag districts

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence County Planning Office would like to remind property owners that the last day to request adding land to an agricultural district is Thursday, March 30.

There are two agricultural districts in St. Lawrence County that primarily span across the St. Lawrence Valley and were created to protect farmland and farming activities. The county’s agricultural districts can help protect sound farming activities from nuisance lawsuits and unreasonable land use regulations.

The County’s Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board will meet on April 6th at 6:00 pm to review the requested additions. The Ag and Farmland Protection Board will examine if the land is classified as agricultural by the local assessor; if the property receives an agricultural exemption; if prime soils are present; if the land is farmed or part of a farm operation based on aerial imagery; and if the farmland is consistent with local land use regulations. The Ag Board will then make a recommendation to the County Board of Legislators on whether the parcels should be added to an Ag District.

A public hearing to receive comments on the Ag and Farmland Protection Board’s recommendation will be held on Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m.

All requests must be postmarked or received no later than March 30.

To obtain a form, or for more information, contact Matilda Larson at the St. Lawrence County Planning Office at (315) 379-2292, or email mlarson@stlawco.org.
