CANTON -- Republicans have selected Stephen Smith as their candidate for superintendent of highways in the fall elections.
In primary voting Tuesday, Smith, a long-time town highway department employee who had been endorsed by outgoing superintendent Calvin Rose, won with 153 votes. Jim Gibson received 92 and two write-in ballots were also cast.
Both candidates also ran on the Conservative line and Gibson won that contest, 6-4.
The results are unofficial and do not include absentee ballots.
