P-H, C-P, H-D schools release information on their fall reopening plans

Schools in St. Lawrence County are crafting their reopening plans as they wait on more guidance from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

At Parishville-Hopkinton Central, school officials have requested a filing deadline extension with the state until Friday, August 7.

“In an effort to devise a thoughtful reopening plan that takes into consideration input from the PHCS Reopening Task Force, we have requested a filing deadline extension with the State until next Friday, August 7th, for submission of our reopening plan,” a message on the school’s website says. “Our primary goal is the safe return of students and staff. The completed plan will be explained through a community Zoom presentation at 6 PM on Thursday, August 6th, which will include a question and answer session. The State is permitting school reopening plans to be “living documents”. This means that plans can be adjusted in response to the impact of Coronavirus in our region.”

There are three instructional models included in Colton-Pierrepont Central’s reopening plan.

“We will be sharing our reopening plan with parents/guardians and our community on Monday. There are three instructional models included in this reopening plan, which address the nine required items from the State Education Department and the Governor’s Office. Governor Cuomo has stated that further guidance will be released by August 7th. We will select a specific schedule based on our three plans/models once that guidance is released. Currently, it is our intent to offer in-person instruction five days per week with safety measures in place in accordance with the Department of Health and State Education Department Guidance.

We know that you may have questions about the 2020-2021 school year that may not be addressed in our weekly email updates about Health and Safety, Food Security, and Academic Instruction. With this in mind, we will be holding a virtual town hall meeting and an in-person town hall meeting in August to address questions and concerns. Here is a schedule of those informational settings: Virtual- Monday, August 10, at 6 p.m. (Facebook Live); in-person (limited numbers)- Monday, August 24, at 6 p.m. (Front Bus Loop)

At Hermon-DeKalb Central, plans are undecided as well. However, three models are under consideration.

“In consultation with the St. Lawrence County Department of Health, our Local Hospital Systems and the Board of Education, Hermon-DeKalb Central has developed a plan with three scenarios to bring students back to school,” a message on the district website says. “These plans are based on feedback from many stakeholder groups including students, staff, families, community members and health care professionals. All of the feedback on the remote learning experiences and the implementation challenges we faced from March through June, helped us prepare these plans for our future. Our Back to School Committees met to review each plan through the lens of their committee to eliminate barriers and work through logistical issues. Other determinations in developing our plans were based on the availability to obtain the proper amount of PPE, how to make our transportation system safe and our physical space within the school to maintain social distancing.”
