WADDINGTON – An Ogdensburg native and former Waddington veteran who died Aug. 23, 2019, will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery Oct. 6.
Robert Tiernan entered the U.S. Army in 1962 and was discharged in 1972 after serving in the Vietnam War. He was discharged due to severe injuries. Tiernan also served his country during the Alaskan Earthquake.
Tiernan was reported “killed in action” on Palm Sunday, 1966.
Fortunately, after a few days, he was found alive in a Saigon Hospital with no ID, but able to speak, according to his sister Judy Jones. He convinced those in charge who he was and asked them to notify his family. She said that is a day her family will never forget.
Tiernan received two Purple Hearts during his service. One for the severe injury that ended his career with the 82nd Airborne Parachute Division and the second for his heroic efforts and injuries sustained in Vietnam.
