Morris announces run for St. Lawrence County Family Court Judge

CANTON -- Surrounded by dozens of family, friends and supporters, Massena native Cecily LaVigne Morris today launched a campaign to become the next Judge in St. Lawrence County Family Court, where she has worked for the past 22 years.

“I am running for Family Court Judge because I am dedicated to families and I am focused on pursuing positive outcomes for children and families,” said Morris. “Our Family Court system must think creatively, be resourceful and ensure a fair process. That’s what I will bring the court as judge, and that’s what I will bring to this campaign.”

Morris is the second candidate to declare her intention to run. Deputy County Attorney Andrew S. Moses has already said he plans to run for the Family Court seat.

Sitting Family Court Judge Barbara Potter was due to announce whether she would or would not seek another 10-year term in the position.

Morris, who is the president of the St. Lawrence County Bar Association, began working in Family Court under Judge David Nelson in 1989 and continues to serve as a court attorney for the court system, primarily in St. Lawrence County Family Court.

Prior to her position in the court system, Morris was a private practice partner in LaVigne, Morris and Peets, with concentrations in family law and municipal law. She served as the Town Attorney for Massena, Brasher, Lawrence, and Louisville.

“My campaign will focus on communicating my experience, qualifications and credentials to the voters in St. Lawrence County,” said Morris. “My experience in Family Court is unmatched. Family Court is what I do every day.”

According to Morris, family court must protect children, look out for their best interests, provide permanency in their lives, and to protect victims of domestic violence.

Morris is a lifelong resident of St. Lawrence County. She and her husband, Mark Morris, both graduated from Massena Central High School and have raised their four children (Michael, Emily, Leah, and Kevin) here. They represent the fourth generation the LaVigne and Morris families raised in St. Lawrence County.
