MASSENA—The New York Power Authority’s (NYPA) Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch will begin operating on a seven day a week schedule just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
During the summer season, the admission-free visitors center, part of NYPA’s St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
The visitors center offers many hands-on exhibits on electricity, energy, the environment and area history. Visitors can hop aboard a bicycle generator and turn pedal power into electricity or have a hair-raising experience with static electricity using the Van de Graaff generator.
An historic wood-carved map detailing Jacques Cartier’s exploration of the St. Lawrence River is also on display at the visitors center.
An audio-visual terrain map charts the course of the mighty St. Lawrence River from Ogdensburg to Massena. Visitors can also enjoy panoramic views of the project’s power dam. A community room is also available for public use.
