Edwards-Knox Central extends fully remote learning until Oct. 26 due to COVID-19

RUSSELL — Fully remote learning has been extended at Edwards-Knox Central until Oct. 26, according to an announcement on the district webpage.

“I know many of you are understandably anxious about returning to in-person learning following the three positive cases of COVID-19 among our staff,” EKCS Superintendent Erin Woods posted on the district website. “I want to respond to some of your concerns as we navigate this difficult time together.

“First of all, I want to let you know that due to the number of staff and students in quarantine and the high volume of test results still pending from the mobile testing unit, we will extend the fully remote learning model until October 26th. We will work closely with the St. Lawrence County Department of Public Health to make data-informed decisions about a safe return to in-person learning between now and the 26th. We plan to resume in-person learning for Southwest Tech and out of district special education students on October 19th. We will also resume athletics at that time. We will evaluate data from the mobile testing and public health contact tracing procedures to support this decision and adjust if necessary.”

“We plan to (virtually) reconvene our school reopening committee to assess a possible hybrid learning model moving forward. We will distribute a survey to staff and the community in the next few days to gather questions, concerns, and feedback,” Woods said.

In good news, the district has received about 60 test results back and all are negative.

Free breakfast and lunch kits will be distributed on the following dates and times at school in the front circle:

10/15 at 4-6 p.m.

10/16 at 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

10/22 at 4-6 p.m.

10/23 at 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

“This has been a challenging time for our Cougar Community, and I want to thank our staff, students, and community for being flexible and adapting to the temporary shift to remote learning. Ultimately, we are eager to bring our students back but we must do so in a way that prioritizes health and safety,” the superintendent said. “Please take care of yourselves and be well.”
