CANTON — The village is mulling over two options presented by NYPA and National Grid to convert its street lights over to LED lights.

At the village board meeting Nov. 18, Village Mayor Mike Dalton said the village’s current street light option is about to end.

There are 366 streetlights in the village provided by National Grid.

Dalton said the village already owns a portion of those. There is funding provided by the state to convert the lights to LED which will mean a cost savings to the village long term. At question is whether the village opts to turn over ownership and responsibility of the all of the lights to NYPA and National Grid and allow them to do the conversion and maintenance, or purchase the remaining lights from National Grid and have village crews do the conversion work.

At their Nov. 18 meeting, board members expressed a desire to have National Grid do the conversion and hold responsibility for the maintenance. They held off voting on the option however until they could review the proposals further.
