Now that the U.S. Supreme Court is hearing testimony in challenges to the Affordable Care Act, Republican candidate for Congress Matt Doheny wants the court to rule that the provision requiring Americans to purchase health insurance is unconstitutional.

The ultimate court in the nation has decided it will hear a case against portions of the health care law under a suit brought by Republican governors and attorneys general from 26 states, the National Federation of Independent Business, and two individual plaintiffs, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“I’m pleased that the Supreme Court has decided to hear the appeal of ObamaCare. I’m hopeful the court will find, as I’ve long argued, that forcing Americans to purchase health care insurance is unconstitutional," said Doheny, a Watertown lawyer and businessman who ran unsuccessfully for the 23rd Congressional District seat last year.

The seat was won by the Plattsburgh businessman Bill Owens, a Democrat, in a three-way race that included conservative and Tea Party favorite Doug Hoffman of Saranac Lake.

"My opponent supported this government overreach and has defended it many times. Since the congressman refuses to protect Central and Northern New Yorkers from this onerous and costly regulation, perhaps the Supreme Court will.

"Regardless of the court’s eventual decision, I will work hard when elected to repeal ObamaCare,” Doheny said.
