(Canton, N.Y.)- The SUNY Canton men’s ice hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit and scored five unanswered goals as they skated past the University of Buffalo 5-3 Saturday afternoon in an ACHA Division I and Eastern Collegiate Hockey League game at the Canton Pavilion to earn a weekend split with the Bulls.

The Roos improved to 19-6 overall and 8-1 in the ECHL.

There was no score after the first period as both teams generated nine shots apiece. The Bulls jumped ahead 1-0 three minutes into the second period and then took a 2-0 lead at the 8:08 mark. But it was all SUNY Canton for the next 29 minutes as they scored five straight goals up to the 17:42 mark of the final period and received some tremendous special teams play.

Doug Burns (Manchester, N.H.) started the scoring for the Roos just 44 seconds after the Bulls second score as he connected for his ninth goal from Chris Schmidbauer (San Diego, Calif.) and the score remained 2-1 after two periods.

The Roos tied the game and took their first lead of the night with a pair of power play goals to start the third period. The Bulls were whistled for an interference penalty three minutes into the period and Garrett Rosenbaum (Charleston, S.C.) promptly tallied his third goal of the year from Darren Camp (Canton, N.Y.) and John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.) at the 4:39 mark. SUNY Canton went ahead 3-2 two minutes later as the Roos again found themselves with the man advantage after another Bulls interference penalty and this time Camp lit the lamp for his 15th goal of the year. The goal came at the 6:35 mark off assists from Payne, who scored the only goal for SUNY Canton on Friday night, and JP Boucha (Warroad, Minn.). It was Boucha’s second assist in as many days.

Things then got interesting for SUNY Canton as they were whistled for five straight penalties over a five-minute stretch that gave the Bulls two five-on-three man advantages. But the Roos’ special teams stymied Buffalo by killing off both of the two-man power plays and another single power play to maintain that 3-2 advantage.

Shortly after SUNY Canton killed off the final power play the team got a lift when Rob Liggio (Canton, N.Y.) scored his team-leading 19th goal from Camp and AJ Royce (Somers, Conn.) to make it 4-2. Burns then scored his second goal of the day with 2:18 left in the game and Buffalo could manage only one more goal at the 17:46 mark and SUNY Canton went on to beat the Bulls for the second time this year.

Jimmy Merrow (Plainsboro, N.J.) got his second start of the weekend and stopped 23 of 26 shots to earn his 10th win of the year.

Chris Kendall had a goal and an assist for Buffalo (9-5, 19-8) and Rich Latona made 21 saves.
