Aston, Pa.—After trailing in the third period, the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team (3-10-1) scored to force overtime and earn a 3-3 tie with 11th-ranked Neumann College (8-4-3). Freshman forward Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) netted the game-tying goal and junior goaltender Trevor O’Neill (Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) stopped 33 shots for the Bears.

Potsdam got off to a strong start in the first period. Senior forward Kevin MacLellan (Kensington, Prince Edward Island/Summerside Capitals) gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in at the 12:43 mark with assists from freshman forward Brandon Couto (Bowmanville, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) and Arnold. Potsdam held the lead into the first intermission.

The Knights tied the score just 1:52 into the second period on a goal from Cory Park, but the Bears responded. At 9:22 freshman forward David Carr (Edmonton, Alberta/St. Albert Steel) put Potsdam back in front after being set up by senior forward Jordan Delong (Perth-Andover, New Brunswick/Woodstock Slammers) and sophomore forward Matt Viola (Toronto, Ontario/Vaughan Vipers). Just 18 seconds later Ryan Dreger evened the score for Neumann and Brent Tamane gave the Knights a 3-2 lead at the 12:19 mark. The Bears fired 16 shots on Neumann goalie Matt Tendler, but weren’t able to get even before the end of the period.

After a boarding call against the Knights early in the third period Potsdam took advantage. At the 7:23 mark sophomore forward Bill Tsekos (Montreal, Quebec/Vaudrevil Mustangs) set up Arnold’s equalizer on the power play. Both teams continued to put shot after shot on goal for the rest of regulation and overtime, but O’Neill and Tendler didn’t surrender another tally.

The Bears outshot the Knights 42-36. Tendler finished with 39 saves. Potsdam was 1-2 on the power play, while Neumann was 0-1.

Potsdam Head Coach Chris Bernard was pleased the results.

“I’m real proud of the boys tonight,” said Bernard. “They really dug deep and gave us a total team effort. We had all four lines playing passionate hockey for sixty minutes. When we make the commitment to do that, we can be a pretty good hockey team.”

Potsdam returns home to host the Castleton State Spartans on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m.
