Owls take doubleheader v. Roos softball

Queensbury, NY – Jaedyn Ossont and Jordan Knapp each recorded three hit games but the SUNY Canton softball team dropped a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader to Maine Presque Isle by scores of 6-0 and 7-3 on Saturday at the Adirondack Sports Complex.

Records: UMPI (10-10, 2-2 NAC) | SUNY Canton (12-16, 5-5 NAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

GAME 1

Jaedyn Ossont went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the opener, while Ossont, Valerie Clark and Alicia Evans each recorded doubles. Selena Tasli had the Roos only other hit.

Maine Presque Isle scored two runs in the first and one each in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

Sarah Duncklee led the Owls with three hits, while Jordan Hansen, Melanee Terry and Marissa Reagle had two hits each. Reagle finished with a home run, while Duncklee had a double.

Kayla Chavarri took the loss on the mound for the Roos giving up six runs. She struck out eight batters but also walked seven. Brookelynn Garcia took the win for UMPI throwing a six-hit shutout with seven strike outs.

GAME 2

Knapp paced the Canton bats with three hits and drove in two runs in the nightcap. Knapp and Chavarri both had doubles as Chavarri had a multi-hit outing. Clark, Evans, Tasli and Sophia Harris also produced hits.

SUNY Canton took the lead in the first inning on a Knapp double to center field. UMPI responded with three runs in the third.

The Roos tied the game heading to the sixth after Clark had an RBI single in the fourth and Knapp produced an RBI single up the middle in the fifth.

With the game knotted at 3-3 heading to the seventh UMPI plated four runs in the final inning on a 2 RBI double from Melanee Terry and a two-run homer from Roni Shaw.

Chavarri took the loss giving up four runs with a strike out in two innings. Reagle was credited with the win for the Owls as she didn't allow a hit in two innings of relief.

The Roos visit SUNY Potsdam for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
